Every Arabic letter has a number. The total is those added together — the working shows each letter so you can check it yourself.
Type the word as it is written, not as it sounds — spelling is the whole calculation. Before trusting a total, read the letter chips and check they are the letters you meant; a single wrong letter can move the number by hundreds. Where a chip is marked as changeable, the reading is genuinely uncertain and yours to settle.
These are traditional practices about which scholars genuinely differ, and some hold parts of them to be impermissible. This site takes no position on that question and is not a substitute for a qualified scholar. Use your own judgement. Terms.
