Terms of use

What this site is, what it does not claim, and what it is not answerable for. It reports what named traditional works prescribe; it does not vouch for them.

This is a calculator. It does arithmetic on letters and dates, following methods set out in traditional sources. It is not advice of any kind.

What it does

It computes the numerical values of names and phrases by the abjad system, and applies methods drawn from named traditional works. Every screen shows its working so you can check the arithmetic yourself, and the conventions in use — which spelling, which set of letter values — are stated on the page.

What it does not do

It is not medical, legal or financial advice, and it makes no promise about any outcome. On religion it is not silent and should not be read as if it were: it reproduces devotional instructions from named traditional works — what to recite, how many times, when, and facing where — because that is what those works say. It does not tell you whether they are sound, whether the practice is permitted, or whether you should take it up. Where the sources disagree with one another, the site says so rather than picking one and presenting it as settled. Where a rule has not been supplied to us, we leave it uncalculated instead of guessing.

Results may differ from other calculators. That is usually because a different spelling convention or a different set of letter values is being used — not because one is broken. Our conventions are stated so the difference can be traced.

Religious matters

These are traditional practices about which scholars genuinely differ, and some hold parts of them to be impermissible. This site takes no position on that question and is not a substitute for a qualified scholar. Use your own judgement.

Cost

Free, with every feature available to everyone. There is no paid tier and no result is withheld. A gift is not a payment: it buys nothing, unlocks nothing, and everything here is identical whether you give or not.

Gifts are made to Aasim Saeed, Essex, United Kingdom, personally. This is not a registered charity, no part of it is a charitable fund, and nothing given here qualifies for Gift Aid or any other tax relief. Gifts go towards running costs and are not ordinarily refundable, but if you gave by mistake, write to [email protected] and it will be returned.

No warranty

The site is provided as it is. We work hard on the accuracy of the arithmetic — it is covered by an automated test suite that checks it against well-known figures on every change — but arithmetic is not a prediction, and what you do with a result is your decision. We are not responsible for what follows from it, however you came by it and whether or not you gave.

Nothing here limits our responsibility for death or personal injury caused by our negligence, for fraud, or for anything else the law does not allow us to exclude.

Who runs this, and under which law

This site is run by Aasim Saeed, Essex, United Kingdom. Write to [email protected] about anything on it, including a gift.

The code, the wording and the tables here are ours, except the third-party material named on the page that uses it. You are welcome to check the arithmetic, quote it and cite it; republishing the site or the sheet as your own is not. Ask instead — the answer will usually be yes.

These terms are governed by the law of England and Wales. If you live elsewhere, this does not take away any protection the law of your own country gives you.
